Dioptini
James S. Miller and Andrew V. Z. BrowerThis tree diagram shows the relationships between several groups of organisms.
The root of the current tree connects the organisms featured in this tree to their containing group and the rest of the Tree of Life. The basal branching point in the tree represents the ancestor of the other groups in the tree. This ancestor diversified over time into several descendent subgroups, which are represented as internal nodes and terminal taxa to the right.
You can click on the root to travel down the Tree of Life all the way to the root of all Life, and you can click on the names of descendent subgroups to travel up the Tree of Life all the way to individual species.

close boxIntroduction
A diverse, almost exclusively neotropical tribe containing many species with wing patterns mimicking those of butterflies, Arctiidae and Geometridae.Characteristics
Although the tribe is clearly monophyletic based upon the structure of the thoracic tympanal organ and other structures, Miller (2009) was unable to discover any uniquely derived and unreversed synapomorphy uniting the Dioptini. He notes two features shared by several genera within the tribe: long, sickle-shaped labial palpae, and the presence of male forewing stridulatory organs. However, both of these features are scattered among diverse genera. He suggests the presence of curled or curved setae on the abdominal venter of the pupa as a potential synapomorphy for the tribe, but immature stages are known for so few taxa that this remains a speculation.
Discussion of Phylogenetic Relationships
Hypothesis of relationships based on Miller's (2009) cladistic analysis of morphological characters of exemplar taxa, with some taxa not included in that analysis added at their presumptive positions based on the discussion in the text.References
