Introduction

One dozen species, type species: Qua­drulella symmetrica

Characteristics

Test: pyriform or with distinct neck, some species with lateral ridge, mostly oval in cross-section, com­posed of endogenous, siliceous, quadrangular plates which are embedded in a sheet-like cement (Fig. 1).  Test colourless, transparent. Shape very similar to certain Nebela spp.. Nucleus always ovular.

Ecology

Habitat: Sphagnum mosses, humus rich soil. Quadrulella species avoid calcareous substrates. Feeding: herbivore.
